No Reservations: All sessions are first come, first participating.
Adding a session to your calendar is a great way to track what you are interested in but does NOT guarantee your spot. We recommend having a few options during each slot as back-up plans. Thanks in advance for moving to another session if you find a room is full. For help, see Sched’s Attendee Guide.

As you plan, note room capacities (listed with room #, e.g. B204 / 72 = building B, room 204, seats 72) and arrive early to help ensure a seat. Thank you for your gracious cooperation and understanding, and for keeping us all safe by observing venue fire codes.

Zen Midrash: Finding Enlightenment through Absurdity

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Zen Buddhism and Rabbinic Judaism share an affinity for texts that can be inscrutable, sometimes maddening, and deeply meaningful. This session will explore different modes of approaching, analyzing, and encountering texts, and how themes and ideas present in foundational Jewish texts are echoed in Zen texts.
We will read Rabbinic texts and selected Zen Koans and see how they are illuminated when put in conversation with each other. In this encounter, we will gain insight into how Buddhism and Judaism approach learning, as a process and as a journey.
